About us

WHA was formed by Sebastian Wolf and Gabby Ziliute as an architectural partnership after having worked together at a large practice specialising in education and community projects. WHA draws on a wealth of varied experience in education, sports, leisure, community, residential and domestic projects.

Collectively we have worked at all scales, and project complexities from the smallest garage conversion to large £20m education projects involving large contractors. We have excellent experience at all RIBA project stages and are used to delivering projects from inception to handover and administering a variety of Traditional and D&B contracts.

OUR DESIGN PROCESS

We start each project trying to understand you, your values and the reasons why you want to build something. We come to the table with no set agenda but rather, to offer creativity, solutions and technical know-how. We love sketching in the early concept design stages, creating lots of ideas and options that we can develop with you. Despite this we are not precious about our designs, if you don’t like one idea we carry on until we find one that you love. Great design is an iterative process that becomes richer when it is collaborative.

We have great relationships with engineers, other designers and consultants and we welcome the early appointment of the wider design team so that the project is well considered.

WHA can provide a full architectural service, from project inception, concept design, planning, tender and construction packages to site delivery and contract administration. We really love to take a project all the way through to handover as we believe that this gives you the best quality but we do understand that this is not always how projects are set up. That’s fine by us, we help and support you in any way that we can.

OUR VALUES

WHA believe in creating and responding to a sense of place and that every project can be unique. We are interested in permanence, tradition, the vernacular and responding to landscape. Sustainability is really important to us. This doesn’t just mean how much energy a building uses, or the embodied carbon used to build the building, but how we can make the building robust, durable and adaptable for future uses. This is our understanding of sustainability.

We like using traditional materials in new ways. We get great joy in seeing a beautiful detail come to life. For us material selection should have purpose and a reason beyond just cost. Using new methods of construction or new materials can be exciting but should be considered carefully to understand the implications fully. Self-finished materials, that weather and age gracefully provide a richness and depth that enhances our experience of buildings and landscapes.
